Becoming a True Leader
In our last article, we talked about the first step in Creating an Award-Winning Team
: hiring the best employees possible through your interview process. But there’s no ‘I’ in team, which means that the next step in forming a successful roster is to evaluate your own effectiveness as a leader. Self-evaluation can be tricky, so we’ve put together a list of ways to Become a True Leader
to help you lead your team to victory.
Be a role model.
You might “talk the talk,” but are you “walking the walk?" Your employees will look up to you as a role model for how business should be carried out. Are you following through with your promises? Are you professional in the workplace? Are you expending all your efforts each and every day? Surely, you are—but it’s important that your employees notice this as well.
Communication is key
. Good leaders ensure that their employees understand what is being communicated to them. However, it is equally as important to ensure that the leader understands their employees’ concerns as well. This will help your employees feel respected and heard, ultimately encouraging mutual respect and fostering motivation within the workplace.
Demonstrate your passion.
You didn’t get into business for nothing—you likely have a passion for growth, development, innovation, and leadership. By showing your employees this passion through your daily efforts, it will light that same fire within them, allowing your team to collectively thrive.
Recognize the talent on your team
. Remember why you hired each of your employees. You saw potential in them! Are you maximizing that potential? Are you allowing room for each employee to show off their skills and blossom? Take the time to ask your employees what they enjoy doing at work, what they excel in, and what they are not so good at. Ensure that each employee’s position allows them to showcase their skills in the most effective way possible. It will not only make your employees happier, but will improve your business as well, ultimately making you a better leader.
Remind yourself that you are a leader.
Sometimes we forget what we’re capable of, and it inhibits our abilities in the end. You should remind yourself that you are a leader! You have earned your position of authority and have already come so far on your journey to leadership. You have been a leader and will continue to be one, so long as you believe that you can be.
In the end, the creation of an award-winning team is dependent not only upon your employees, but on their leader as well. If you follow these tips, you will be on your way to becoming a true leader. Stay tuned for next week’s article, Weed Man’s Top 5 – 5 Reasons Why Franchising Might be for You.
