Finding Work/Life Balance: Part 2

Whether you’re an existing business owner, an aspiring entrepreneur or someone who loves the 9-5 grind, you likely always have “stuff” to deal with - whether that means business meetings, your kid’s weekly soccer game, social gatherings or chores around the house or office. Achieving and maintaining work/life balance is important for your overall well being. In our last article, we discussed the importance of prioritizing, establishing boundaries and, as a business owner or manager, delegating. But there’s more to it than that. Below, we talk about planning, organization and finding enjoyment in your everyday career.

Get organized. It all starts with setting your priorities (which we talked about in Part 1 of this series). Consider preparing a daily or weekly “to-do” list, if you don’t already. Invest in a new day planner and check off items as you’ve completed them.
Work/Life Balance

Set aside a few minutes each day to tidy up your workspace. Remove any items from your desk that might cause distraction to ensure maximum productivity. While you’re at it, why not organize your email inbox? Delete messages that you no longer need to reference, flag emails that still need tending to, unsubscribe from junky email lists etc.

Implementing a few small changes and doing some extra planning and organization will surely help you achieve a better balance between your work and home life!

Don’t worry, be happy! Finding enjoyment and fulfillment in your everyday career is essential to achieving work/life balance. You spend so much of your time at your job, make it a place you enjoy being. Make friends at work. Mingle, take time out of your day to say hello and engage in conversation with your co-workers. Who knows? Maybe you’ll realize you have more in common than you thought!

Be proud of the work you do. If you’re feeling bored with the normal day-to-day, ask to take on a new project. The initiative will look good on you and once the task at hand has been completed, you’ll feel a sense of ownership and pride in your work.

Adjust your mindset. It may sound cliché, but your thoughts will help create your reality. Create new habits to make your workday more enjoyable, like taking a breather every few hours. Step outside and get some fresh air or take a stroll over to the water cooler and engage one of your co-workers in a quick chat. Making a point of taking a (well-deserved) break can do a lot for your productivity levels!

Without implementing tips like these, we risk the possibility of burnout and unhappiness – in our everyday lives and/or careers. No matter what industry you work in or what position you hold, be intentional about your work/life management. You won’t regret it!
