Franchising vs. Independent Start-Ups: Part 2

The Pros & Cons

In our last article, we talked about some of the pros and cons to franchising versus starting your own independent business, including Investment Costs, Brand Awareness, Systems, Training and Support. Today, we delve a little deeper. Regardless of what route you decide to take, we hope the information below helps you make the best decision for you!

Control / Freedom

When (and if) you make the decision to start a franchised business, you will sign a Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) – a legal document that covers, in detail, everything you need to know about the business model. This includes financial requirements, your obligations as the franchisee, obligations of the franchisor, your service territory, authorized vendors (which we talk more about below), contacts, etc.

With all of that said, and as you likely already know, when you invest in a franchise it is your business, however there are certain guidelines and rules that you are expected to follow. These guidelines are put in place to ensure brand consistency and standards. After all, you’re buying into an existing, reputable brand and the franchisor wants to make sure it stays that way!

Vendors and Pricing

One of the many benefits of franchising is the dominant purchasing power you get to be a part of as a franchisee. For instance, Weed Man franchisees get to enjoy extremely favorable volume pricing, as well as payment terms that are negotiated with suppliers (by your support team at corporate office), based on anticipated system-wide purchases. Financing Options Starting your own business is exciting, but oftentimes, finding financing can be a challenge. When you franchise, finding financing can be a lot easier of a process. Weed Man franchisee, Brandon Burns, talks about his experience with finding franchising in the video clip below (0:00 – 1:30).
