In-House vs. Outsourcing: Part One

Assessing Your Needs

At one point or another, every company must analyze whether outsourcing specific tasks or keeping matters in-house is more beneficial for the business. This decision can be a big one, as making the wrong selection can be costly and bring productivity to a standstill.

Hiring an outside service provider to manage a portion of your business is considered outsourcing.  In-house work, also known as insourcing, relies on building and utilizing your own team for specific operational functions or projects.

Making an informed decision starts with assessing your company’s needs. Ask yourself the following questions:

What are the most important skills or resources you require?

  • Accounting
  • Human Resources
  • Customer Service
  • Web Design
  • Web Development
  • Advertising
  • Graphic Design
  • Content Marketing
How often will you require them?
  • Consistently
  • Seasonally
  • Temporarily
  • In a Limited Capacity
What’s your budget?
  • Can you afford to pay a full time salary?
  • Would you prefer to pay for smaller projects on an as-needed basis?
Is the specific function you require generally better performed in-house or by an outside service provider?
  • Does it require consistent management?
  • Does it require regular feedback from members of your team?
Is the skill or resource you require part of a core company function?

Why it Matters

Taking a close look at the above list will truly benefit your business in the long run. Many companies dive head first into an outsourcing project, for example, and wind up with a much larger project than expected for which an in-house employee is ultimately needed. In addition to being expensive, such a shift can create confusion and chaos, potentially impacting the project or department in a negative way.
