If you’re a business owner considering sponsoring a local team, athlete, or event, you may be wondering what your options and what may be expected of your business (financial or otherwise). Before you begin, it’s important to keep in mind that not all sponsorship packages are alike, and there will always be a certain level of customization involved in your particular sponsorship arrangement.
That being said, there are four main types of sponsorships to consider. Read on below for more information!
Monetary Sponsorship. A company may decide to provide a local team or event with a pre-determined amount, delivered in a lump sum or over the course of an agreed-upon time period. Although sponsorship package costs vary from organization to organization, they commonly range from $100 up to $5,000.
Equipment Sponsorship. Businesses can assist a local team by providing jerseys or uniforms, water bottles, coolers, and other promotional items. You may want to do your research on pricing for certain promo items, because these can get expensive if you don’t have the right supplier.
Service Sponsorship. A company may decide to sponsor a local team or event by providing services related to the business. For example, at Weed Man we often volunteer to care for a local playing field or provide lawn care services to a local athlete while he or she trains.
Time Sponsorship. In lieu of money, business owners may choose to donate their time on a regular or one-time basis. Examples include: running a table at a local event, coaching a local team, or handing out drinks and snacks at a little league game.
No matter which type of sponsorship you decide to offer, you may also want to provide:
- A special discount for anyone affiliated with the sponsored team: players, parents, coaches, volunteers
- Postcards/flyers listing your products and services, phone number, website, and e-mail address
- Small, inexpensive promotional items featuring your company’s logo and contact information
