John taught school for five years and has spent 26 years in the green industry. John was the founder and operator of Outdoor Enterprises, Inc., a full-service landscape install and maintenance company. David spent 16 years in chemical manufacturing (engineering, construction, production). Together, John and David purchased their Weed Man franchise in late 2005.

Family: John has been married for 25 years.  He and his wife have four daughters and a new son-in-law. David has been married for 25 years and he and his wife have two college-age sons with two special dogs.

Why Weed Man? Weed Man offers a low-cost entry point into a well-established, reputable franchise system. At the time as an owner of a full-service landscape company, I (John) began seeking an add-on business opportunity to help me diversify my business portfolio. I saw the complexity to the landscaping and maintenance side of the industry, and the lawn care side was appealing to me: a truck, a man, a spreader and materials vs. a truck with thousands of dollars of equipment, multiple men per truck, various tasks throughout the day where all were different from job to job, and unknown materials. The Weed Man concept was appealing in this regard.

What are you most proud of so far as a Weed Man franchisee? We are quite proud of the team we have built in the upstate of South Carolina. We have worked very hard to create a team of quality individuals. The team strives to go above and beyond their clients’ expectations and deliver quality lawns to them. We have team members that desire the same expectations that we as owners have! This is very difficult in today’s work environment, but it is very important to them.

What is the key to your success? Our associates and employees make us successful. We work hard every day to deliver a quality service to our client base. This starts by operating a quality office and warehouse facility and treating our associates properly and, in turn, offering that same approach to our clients. We also budget according to our business model and then strive each day to stay in line with that business model budget. We follow the advice of Winston Churchill, who once said “It’s not enough that we do our best; sometimes we have to do what’s required.”
