With Weed Man, These Olympians Bring New Meaning to the Word Team

Partners in life, partners on the ice, and now partners in lawn care, these Olympians bring new meaning to the word “team!” Just last year, husband-and-wife curling duo Brent Laing and Jennifer and BrentJennifer Jones competed for Canada in the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Gangneung, South Korea. Now they’re leaving the ice and hitting the lawn!

On April 30, 2024, Jennifer and Brent officially took over ownership of the local Weed Man franchise in Barrie-Collingwood, along with its sub-brand Mosquito Hero. The local franchise has been operated by Brent’s family since 1982, and Brent and Jennifer couldn’t be more excited to leverage their competitive spirit and teamwork to continue providing exceptional lawn care services to homeowners in the Barrie, Ontario area.

“At the end of the day,” says Brent, “we're just a part of a different team. This is a team that delivers customer service in the lawn care industry, whereas before it was a team that delivered shot making on the curling ice. It's the same. You plan, you execute, you debrief, and you replan, and you execute, and you debrief. And all the way along it's not a straight line up, but it's all about getting better at what you do being more efficient.”

Jennifer and Brent Family“This is a big step for us,” says Jennifer. “Not only as entrepreneurs but as a family. Brent's dad has poured his heart and soul into operating this business for the past 40 years… We're honored to continue the legacy [Brent’s parents] Jane and George have built together. This business holds a special place in our hearts, and we're thrilled to keep it in the family. It's not just about running a business—it's about preserving a tradition and a sense of community. We can't wait to see where this journey takes us.”

Fierce competitors, both Jennifer and Brent have competed for Canada in the Olympics (Jennifer in 2022 and 2014; Brent in 2018) and the World Curling Championships (Brent a 3-time gold medalist in 2007, 2012, and 2016; Jennifer a 2-time gold medalist, 1-time silver medalist, and 1-time bronze medalist in 2018, 2008, 2015, and 2010 respectively). In fact, the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris mark the 10-year anniversary of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, where Jennifer brought home the gold!

It’s safe to say that Brent and Jennifer have what it takes to win the lawn care game.
